Ali, Osman. 1998. Bukak Api (Open Fire). 80 mins. Color.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Pink Triangle Sdn Bhd.
Originally intended as a safe sex educational film for the
sex worker/transsexual community of Chow Kit, this life-affirming
and politically militant film follows the lives led by half a
dozen characters and reveals the effect of health and sexual
issues on them. Director Osman Ali successfully captured the
colour and flavour of the street life led by his subjects in
this film made on a shoestring budget of RM30,000 and shot on
Digital Beta in just 12 days. A celebration of the right to
choose your sexuality and lifestyle, Bukak Api won the 2000
